Yoga-nidrā is a simple yet extremely effective practice that works to relax the entire being on all levels: physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual/energetic, creating space for effortless peacefulness to naturally arise. Also known as Yogic sleep, nidrā allows us to leave the waking state, go through the dreaming state and into the deep sleep state, while remaining fully awake. “Yoga-nidrā restores the body, senses, and mind to their natural functions and awakens a seventh sense that allows us to feel no separation, that only sees wholeness, tranquility, and wellbeing,” says Richard Miller, a clinical psychologist, teacher, and author of Yoga Nidra: A Meditative Practice for Deep Relaxation and Healing.
You don’t have to have experience doing yoga or practicing meditation to be comfortable practicing yoga-nidrā. The class is traditionally taught lying down, supporting various parts of the body with bolsters or rolled up blankets to allow the participant to completely relax and enjoy the guided practice. As a meditation technique, yoga-nidrā offers a gentle approach, beginning with awareness of the breath and body, then working compassionately with thoughts and feelings as they arise, gradually leading the practitioner to slow down their brain waves and access a greater field of consciousness, connected to all living things.
